SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Two late goals by senior Andrew Feld and freshman Patrick Wallen lifted the University of San Diego Toreros to a 2-0 victory over the No. 15 ranked Michigan State University Spartans Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium. The victory also meant champions of the 2009 USD Nike Soccer Classic.
The win keeps USD above .500 with a 4-2-0 record on the season with one match remaining in the non-conference schedule. The Spartan's record their first loss of the season falling to 4-1-1.
Senior forward Andrew Feld locked up the first goal for USD in the 61st minute with a shot from 20 yards out. Freshman forward Nolan Chandler crossed a ball to center from the far side which bounced off Patrick Wallen's chest inside the penalty box back towards Feld. On the volley, Feld fired off the shot from just outside the penalty box into the upper right 90 for the 1-0 lead.
Later in the 85th minute, Wallen put a goal of his own on the scoreboard from 10 yards out giving USD a 2-0 lead over the Spartan's. Chandler connected a pass from the backfield to teammate JT Howlan who was 45 yards from the net on the near side. Howlan sent a ball into the center where it connected with Wallen who weaved his way through MSU defenders, gave the ball two quick touches as the Spartan goalkeeper Joe Gregus charged out. Wallen pulled the trigger with a low shot that found the net lifting USD to a 2-0 lead and the win.
The Toreros out-shot Michigan State 12-4 in the match. The Spartan's recorded five saves on the day to Kelin Briones' one. The Toreros tallied four corner kicks while the Spartan's had one.
The Toreros return on Friday, September 25 to Torero Stadium to take on the UCLA Bruins at 7:00 p.m.
