IRVINE, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team opened the USTA/ITA Southwest Region Championships with six singles wins on Thursday in Irvine, Calif. Doubles action was postponed until Friday due to weather in the morning.
Freshman Emilio Mora started things off for the Toreros by defeating UC Irvine's Jon Kazarian in a back and forth battle (4-6, 6-4, 7-6), but then lost in the round of 64 to Andre Feliz of San Diego State (6-2, 6-2).
Senior Dean Jackson continued his stellar play this fall by defeating Shiva Sangwan of San Diego State (6-0, 7-6) after a first-round bye. He moves on to face No. 102 J.T. Sundling of Southern California in the round of 32 on Friday.
Junior Patrick Pohlmann, who carried a preseason No. 92 ranking into the tournament, earned his first singles win as a Torero by beating Arizona's Tom Wolff handily (6-2, 6-2) after a first-round bye.
Freshman Clarke Spinosa continued his strong start to his collegiate career by cruising past Cal Poly's Alex Sonnenson (6-1, 6-2) and advances to play No. 106 Dennis Lajola of Hawai'I in the round of 32.
Senior Abdullah Hashem split his two matches of the day, earning a win over Kyle Jackson of Cal Poly (6-4, 6-1), before dropping his second match to No. 87 Amit Inbar of UCLA (6-4, 6-1).
Junior Nikola Bubnic, ranked No. 67, came out swinging after his first-round bye, knocking off Drew Jacobs of Cal Poly (6-2, 6-3) to advance to the round of 32.
Sophomore Thibaut Visy lost a heartbreaker to San Diego State's Javier Pulgar (3-6, 7-5, 7-5) in the last match of the day, while teammate Nils Schive lost his opening-round match to Sebastian Bell of Cal Poly (6-5, 6-2).
Tomorrow's schedule will include two rounds of doubles starting at 8:30 a.m., with singles beginning at 12:00 p.m. for the top half of the singles draw and 2:00 p.m. for the bottom half. Matches are being played at Anteater Tennis Center, Anteater Recreation Center, and the Racquet Club of Irvine.
