IRVINE, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team continued play at the USTA/ITA Southwest Region Championships in Irvine, Calif. on Friday with five victories, three in singles and two in doubles.

Dean Jackson, the Toreros' singles wins leader this fall, kept the momentum going with a victory over USC's J.T. Sundling, who was ranked No. 102 in the preseason rankings (6-1, 6-3). Jackson advances to the round of 16 to play UCLA's Daniel Kosakowski, the No. 9 seed in the tournament.

Nils Schive and Thibaut Visy followed Jackson's footsteps by winning their consolation-round matches, as Schive knocked off UC Riverside's Ryan Stanbury (6-1, 6-4) and Visy defeated Southern California's Joel Giger (6-2, 6-5).

Other Toreros in the main draw did not fair so well on Friday, as Clarke Spinosa was topped by Hawaii's Dennis Lajola, ranked No. 106 (6-4, 6-4), Patrick Pohlmann fell to Clay Thompson of UCLA (6-4, 6-4), and Nikola Bubnic lost to Pepperdine's David Sofaer (6-3, 6-3).

In doubles play, the Toreros' duo of Spinosa and Visy earned one of USD's doubles win on the day, beating Hawaii's Jonathan Brooklyn and Jeremy Tweedt (8-3), while USD's top doubles pair of Jackson and Pohlmann defeated San Diego State's Shiva Sangwan and Matt Tosches (8-4). Meanwhile, Bubnic and Mora lost to Jeff Gast and Max Ta Ba Troung of UCLA (8-5), and Abdullah Hashem and Schive were bested by UCLA's Alex Brigham and Warren Hardie in a tight match (8-6).

Play continues on Saturday with doubles slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. with singles to follow.
