SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team won a total of seven matches on the opening day of the SDSU Fall Tournament at Aztec Tennis Center on Friday. The Toreros had six singles victories and one doubles win.
Freshman Clarke Spinosa opened his collegiate tennis career with a pair of wins in singles bracket A, beating UC Riverside's Quoc Doan, 6-2, 6-1, and University of the Pacific's Fernando Ristow, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 10-8.
In singles bracket B, USD sophomore Thibaut Visy fell to San Francisco's Richard Bucalem, 7-5, 3-6, 10-8, in the opening round and then Tomasz Kryskowski from the University of the Pacific, 7-6 (4), 6-0, in the bracket consolation.
Senior Nils Schive lost to USC's Michael Grant, 6-2, 6-3, in the singles bracket C first round match, but came back to top UC San Diego's Vincent Nguyen, 6-1, 6-4 in the consolation.
Also in singles bracket C, Torero senior Abdullah Hashem won back-to-back matches, beating Sean Peterson of UC Riverside, 6-0, 6-0, and Zach Jiganti of San Francisco, 6-1, 6-4.
In singles bracket D, USD freshman Emilio Mora won his first-career match, defeating UC San Diego's Jake Fellow, 6-1, 6-4 in his opening round matchup.
In doubles, the Toreros recorded a victory as Spinosa and Schive teamed to beat UC San Diego's Jason Wall and Armaun Emani, 9-8, while the doubles tandem of Mora and Hashem dropped a tight match to USC's Grant and Joel Giger, 9-8.
Torero assistant coach Ryan Keckley had this to say about his players' performance on day one: "Our boys came out ready to fight. As for most of them it was their first competition of the year. After shaking out a few nerves, I was pleased with their efforts and willingness to compete. It is a lot of matches in a short amount of time so it is as much of a physical grind as it is a mental challenge. Let's hope for the same fight tomorrow."
