Pair of Toreros Advance Through Qualifying

LOS ANGELES, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team opened play Wednesday with two players advancing to the main draw of the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Torero freshman Clarke Spinosa joined senior Nils Schive needed to win one match each to advance to the main draw field of 32.

After a first-round bye, Spinosa made quick work of UC Irvine's Ryan Cheung, 6-2, 6-2. Spinosa moves on to face No. 5 seed Evan Urbina from BYU in the first round of the main draw on Thursday.

Schive also took advantage of a first-round bye and advanced to the main draw by beating Azusa Pacific's Alex Dickson handily, 6-0, 6-1. Schive will matchup with No. 4-seed Jaak Poldma of USC.

Mora was unable to continue the momentum of his first-round qualifying victory over Jeff Gast of UCLA (6-4, 6-7, 11-9) as he fell to UC Irvine's Sam Gould in the round of 32, 6-2, 6-2.

Hashem was unable to get out of the first round as Daniel Simko of Loyola Marymount pulled out the victory, 6-3, 6-4.

Play continues from Los Angeles Tennis Center on Thursday with singles action kicking off at 10:30 a.m. followed by doubles at approximately 1:00 p.m.
