LOS ANGELES, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team racked up a total of five wins on day two of the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Thursday. Among the Toreros' wins were two singles victories and three doubles wins.
Freshman Clarke Spinosa saw his run in the singles main draw end in the round of 16 but not before defeating BYU's Evan Urbina, the fifth seed, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, in his first match of the main draw. Senior Nils Schive was unable to take down fourth-seeded Jaak Poldma of USC, who is ranked No. 65, in his opening main draw match, losing 6-3, 6-2.
After a loss on day one, senior Abdullah Hashem bounced back with a victory in the singles qualifying consolation as he bested UC Riverside's Austin Andres, 9-7. Unfortunately, Hashem couldn't keep the run going, losing to Devon Sousa of UC San Diego, 8-6, in the qualifying consolation round of 16.
On the first day of doubles action, both Torero tandems advanced to the main draw by winning matches in the qualifying rounds. The pair of Hashem and Spinosa won back-to-back contests, while Mora and Schive took advantage of a first-round bye and won their only doubles match of the day by pulling out a tight victory over Ryan Cheung and Steven Henderson of UC Irvine, 8-6.
The Toreros continue play Friday in the singles main draw consolation, where Nils Schive will meet UC San Diego's Junya Yoshida at 10:00 a.m., and the doubles main draw where both USD pairs will open the main draw at 2:00 p.m. from the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
