USD's Mario Kurn named Associated Press FCS All-American

Dec. 15, 2010

San Diego, CA) - University of San Diego junior defensive end Mario Kurn (Encinitas, CA) received more good news today when he was named to the Associated Press FCS All-America second team for defense. Kurn, who was a nominee for two prestigious post-season national honors (Buck Buchanan Award and Ted Hendrick's Award), was joined on the second team defensive line unit by junior Ameet Pall of Wofford, junior Zach Nash of Sacramento State and senior Dain Taylor of Drake. Two other players from the Pioneer Football League were also honored - senior safety James Vercammen of Dayton (2nd Team Defense), and senior defensive lineman Devon Langhorst of Dayton (3rd Team Defense).

Kurn was the top Football Championship Subdivision player in quarterback sacks this season (17 for -118 yards) and ranked second in tackles for loss (27 for -141 yards). Through 11 games he totaled a team-best 66 tackles (38 solo), along with chipping in 2 forced fumbles, 7 quarterback hurries, 5 pass break-ups and 5 pass deflections.

"It is great to see Mario recognized on a national level by being named an FCS All-American," said USD head coach Ron Caragher. "It is truly an honor as he is with some outstanding company. First and foremost, Mario has a great work ethic. That work ethic combined with his strength, speed, and powe make him a formidable pass rusher and outstanding defensive end."
