SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team split their doubleheader on Wednesday night against the Northern Illinois University Huskies winning game one 4-0 and falling in game two 7-1.
The Toreros move to 4-9 overall with the split while the Huskies move to 2-10 overall.
In game one, San Diego and Northern Illinois battled to record the first run of the game. After tough defense on San Diego's part, the Toreros posted two runs in the second inning. Cathy Wineinger lead off the inning with a ground out to second base, as Taylor Lawrence and Danielle Duhart recorded back-to-back singles. Kristen Gensler had the second out on an fly out to shortstop moving Lawrence to third base and Duhart to second base. Jennifer Ellenbeck hit a two-RBI single scoring Duhart and Lawrence. Celeste Soto grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.
San Diego recorded pulled away to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning as the Toreros recorded two runs on four hits. Ellenbeck recorded an RBI-single while Taylor Hensley would later record an RBI-single scoring Ellenbeck.
In game two, the Toreros fell behind 3-0 when the Huskies hit a solo homerun over the centerfield wall taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning and recorded two runs in the third inning. San Diego responded with a run in the bottom half of the third inning when the Toreros had runners at second and third base and NIU pitched an illegal pitch moving all runners up scoring Megan Walsh. The Huskies would record one run in the fifth and sixth innings, and two in the seventh inning pulling away 7-1 over the Toreros.
Danielle Duhart hit 5-for-6 for .833 batting average with two runs scored. Jennifer Ellenbeck had 3-for-6 hitting .500 with one run scored and three RBI.

The Toreros prepare for the weekend as they will travel on Friday for the Long Beach State tournament where they will face Notre Dame, Buffalo, Purdue, Long Beach State, and UNLV.
