The Jacksonville Jaguars signed first-year wide receiver John Matthews to the active roster from the practice squad on Saturday and placed second-year wide receiver Jarett Dillard on injured reserve with a foot injury. Matthews will be suited up and on the sideline for today's home opener against the Denver Broncos.
Matthews, 6-0, 200, spent training camp with the Jaguars before he was waived during final cuts. He finished the preseason with eight receptions, the most receptions among the club's wide receivers, for 83 yards and a team-leading two receiving touchdowns.
The 24-year-old Matthews was originally signed by the Colts as a rookie free agent in 2009 and he spent the majority of last season on the Colts practice squad. He was claimed off waivers by the Jaguars on July 21. The former San Diego standout finished his collegiate career at San Diego with 195 receptions for 3,615 yards and 50 touchdowns. He joins former USD teammates Josh Johnson (Tampa Bay) and Eric Bakhtiari (Tennessee) as active players in the NFL.
Dillard was one of three wideouts selected by the Jaguars in the 2009 draft. He appeared in seven games as a rookie and finished with six receptions for 106 yards (17.7 avg.). He suffered an ankle injury in week 10 last season and was placed on injured reserve.
