SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The 20th-ranked University of San Diego men's tennis team extended their winning streak to nine matches with a 5-2 victory Thursday afternoon over UAB in the Hilton Mission Valley Spring Classic at Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros (12-2) didn't miss a beat with a shuffled lineup in the match, while the Blazers (3-6) captured a pair of singles wins at the bottom of the ladder.
Playing at No. 1 for the first time this season, Nikola Bubnic and Nils Schive stretched their doubles winning streak to five matches with an 8-2 win over David Zimmerman and Tom Puetz, which was followed by a victory from Dean Jackson and Abdullah Hashem at No. 3 over Daniel Moser and Lucas Dirube by a score of 8-5 that sealed the doubles point for the Toreros.
Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy added an 8-4 win to Toreros' the doubles success by beating Danny Manlow and Chris Helliar to improve to 11-4 on the year.
In singles play the Toreros won the first three contests with ease as Bubnic topped Dirube at No. 2 in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, No. 83 Spinosa defeated Manlow 6-3, 6-0, and Visy cruised by Puetz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. Bubnic won his eighth singles match in a row, while Spinosa posted his ninth-straight and Visy his 11th-consecutive.
The Blazers notched one of their two wins at No. 6 when Helliar fought past Schive 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.
No. 30 Jackson answered with the final Torero point, a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Zimmerman at No. 1, which improved Jackson's singles mark to a team-best 24-5 this season.
Wrapping up singles play at No. 5 was Moser, who pulled out a 7-6(2), 7-5 win over freshman Emilio Mora.
This was only the second time these two teams have ever met, with USD winning both matches.
The Toreros continue play in the Hilton Mission Valley Spring Classic on Friday, March 18th where they will play at San Diego State's Aztec Tennis Center with their opponent to be determined pending results from matches played at SDSU on Thursday afternoon.
