Final Tournament Draw
SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team captured the championship of the Hilton Mission Valley Spring Classic with a 6-1 win over No. 67 Purdue on Saturday afternoon from the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State University. The 20th-ranked Toreros (14-2) wrapped up the three-day tournament with a perfect 3-0 record, while the Boilermakers dropped to 9-6 with the loss.
Dean Jackson and Emilio Mora got things started for the Toreros with an 8-4 doubles victory over Aaron Dujovne and Mark Kovacs at No. 3 and Nikola Bubnic and Nils Schive clinched the doubles point by beating Szymon Tatarczyk and Pawel Poziomski 8-5 at No. 1.
Purdue managed to take one doubles match when Eric Ramos and Krisztian Krocsko defeated Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy 8-6.
USD controlled singles play as Abdullah Hashem notched his first dual singles win of the year by beating Poziomski in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Visy followed that with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kovacs, while Bubnic sealed the win for the Toreros with his 6-3, 7-6(3) win at No. 2 over Krocsko.
The Boilermakers earned their lone singles win of the day at No. 5 where Dujovne topped Mora 6-3, 6-4.
Jackson, ranked 30th in singles, defeated Tatarczyk at No. 1 when Tatarczyk retired down 4-1 in the third set after a 5-7 first set and a 6-3 second.
No. 83 Spinosa posted the final victory of the day for the Toreros, outlasting Ramos 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 4.
"We want to thank Matt Baker and Kyle Jones at the Hilton Mission Valley for helping put on an outstanding tournament this week," said USD head coach Brett Masi after the win. "We were very happy with the tournament overall and how we played as a team. I'm really proud of our guys battling the whole week and stepping up to fill in for Patrick (Pohlmann). It was a great all around effort from all of our guys."
The Toreros return to Hogan Tennis Center for a 1:30 p.m. match with Utah on Friday, March 25th.
