March 28, 2011

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - This past weekend, the USD Track team headed to Point Loma College for an exhilarating afternoon of racing. The action was ignited with the 4 x 800m races, where both the men's and women's team performed well. On the women's side, the team featuring Gillian Gorelick, Kirsten Allen, Emerald Raney, and Lily Werthan clocked in at an impressive time of 9:54, good enough for a 4th place finish.

Next was the 1500m race, where the Torero men, Cameron Erdhart and Chris Flaherty both finished with personal bests of 4:07 and 3:57, respectively.

Following the 1500m was the individual 800m races where Ben Condrea clocked the fastest 800m for USD this year with a time of 1:59. Ben said "I felt really strong and relaxed the fist lap and once I heard the bell for the 2nd lap, I kicked it into the next year and ran a personal best." As well Justin Haley clocked his fastest time of the year with a 2:00:09 finishing time which placed him in first for his heat.

The closing events for the meet featured the 5000m race where it was the first time the Torero track team competed in the race. On the girls side, Kristy Koenes lead the way with a winning time of 17:41. "I decided to stay relaxed and let my competitors take the lead and once I knew I had more left then she did, I capitalized and took the lead." Gillian Gorelick finished in 3rd with an 18:05 and Tracy Vargo clocked in at 18:59 for a solid 7th place finish.

"I am very satisfied with how our team ran today, we just hit the heart of the season and the team looks really excited to continue to race strong and smart" said Coach Will Guarino

Your Torero Track team will be back in action April 8th at the JJK meet at UCLA. Make sure you mark your calendars for this one!
