Irvine, CA - Sophomore Kristy Koenes sets the pace at Asics/Steve Scott at UC Irvine finishing in 8th place in the 5,000 meters. She led the Toreros on a hot day at Anteater stadium.
"Kristy continues to run well and once again is showing that she is in excellent racing fitness," said Coach Guarino. "She was shy of her personal best, but ran a strong first half on this hot day in Irvine, California. We have worked on getting out fast which was part of the strategy, but the heat was just a bit much for the second half of the race." The Toreros enjoyed seeing Captain Tracy Vargo run strong from the gun as well. She finished with a season best and finished with a time of 18:36.11.
The Men's team was also at the invitational, but participated as unattached competitors. The Men's outstanding performance came in the 1500m. Chris Flaherty made a move on his competition with 500m to go and caught 5 guys and dropped them in the last 150 meters from the finish line. He was successful in not only winning his heat but also setting a new personal best and a second best 1500m ever at the University of San Diego. His raced was clocked in at 3:55.21 (translates into a 4:13 mile).
