USD Football names Steven Irvin cornerbacks coach

Aug. 3, 2011

(San Diego, CA) - USD head football Ron Caragher has announced the hiring of Steven Irvin as the team's cornerbacks coach, in addition to promoting three other assistants. Irvin, who replaces Gabe Franklin who took a similar position with UTEP, comes to USD from Texas State University where he was cornerbacks coach the past three seasons. Irvin helped produce two All-Southland Conference cornerbacks in Morris Crosby and Darryl Morris, and another Honorable Mention choice in Will Thompson.

"I am excited to add Steve Irvin to our staff as our new cornerbacks coach," said head coach Ron Caragher. "His teaching skills and experience will be a great addition to our program."

Prior to Texas State, Irvin served as an assistant coach at College of the Desert in Palm Springs in 2007. While he was there, the Roadrunners posted a 9-1 regular season record, won a conference co-championship and advanced to the state playoffs for the first time in school history when they played Bakersfield in the Golden Empire Bowl. The College of the Desert also ranked second in total defense in conference play as well.

The 2007 season was the second time Irvin served as an assistant coach at the College of the Desert. He also was an assistant coach from 1999-2001, serving as defensive coordinator in 2001. In addition to his coaching duties, he was an instructional support assistant in the Physical Education Department in 2001-02.

In between those two stints, Irvin was an assistant coach at Montana State for one year, where he coached the safeties. He also was the assistant director of football operations at San Diego State in 2004-06 after serving as a graduate assistant coach at San Diego State in 2002-03, working with the defensive ends.

Irvin played two years of football at UNLV (1997-98) where he competed at linebacker. He earned his B.S degree in Kinesiology from UNLV in 1999 and went on to earn his M.A in Education from San Diego State in 2004.

In addition to adding Irvin to his coaching staff, Coach Caragher has promoted three of his assistant coaches. Jon Sumrall, who enters his 5th season with the Toreros, has been promoted to Assistant Head Coach. Sumrall will still oversee his duties as Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach. Tanner Engstrand, who enters his 7th season, has been promoted to Offensive Coordinator. He will continue to be in charge of Torero quarterbacks. Lastly, Keith Carter, who enters his 3rd year, has been promoted to Running Game Coordinator. He will continue to coach the offensive line unit as well.

The Toreros open camp August 9th with first practice slated for August 10th at 2:30 pm. USD season opener will be September 3rd with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Azusa Pacific University.
