SAN DIEGO, Calif.- After a slow offensive performance in their last contest, the University of San Diego men's soccer team exploded for a 4-0 shutout against Manhattan College Sunday afternoon from Torero Stadium. The Toreros (3-2-0) won their third straight match while scoring four goals for the first time since a 4-1 win over Loyola Marymount on Oct. 25th, 2009.
The Toreros came out of the gates controlling the ball as they held a 16-4 edge in shots during a first half that saw USD on the Manhattan (0-4-0) side of the field for the majority of the period. After a flurry of attempts that failed to yield a score, junior midfielder Christian Duke floated a cross from the left wing into sophomore defender Elijah Galbraith-Knapp who controlled it inside the box and tapped it past Manhattan keeper Christopher Lands from the six yard line to give USD a 1-0 advantage in the 33rd minute of action.
Coming out in the second half, it was all Toreros as junior midfielder Conor McFadden tallied his first goal of the season when he took a long pass from Patrick Wallen and dribbled up the left wing with a one-on-one against new Jasper keeper George Ellis that put USD up 2-0 in the 54th minute.
In the 68th minute, redshirt sophomore Sean O'Connor kept the momentum in the Toreros' favor when he took a Duke pass from the left wing and found the back of the net from 10 yards out for his first career goal, putting the Toreros up 3-0.
USD wasted no time in adding to the lead as a pair of freshmen teamed up to give the Toreros their final 4-0 lead. Joey Dei Rossi delivered a pass from the right wing into the box that Sean Klauer corralled in traffic and slipped past Ellis from 10 yards out into the far corner, giving Dei Rossi his first career assist and Klauer his first career goal.
Overall, USD maintained a decisive 23-5 edge in shots, hold the Jaspers to just one shot in the second half.
For the Toreros, senior Adam Campbell and redshirt freshman Drew Ilijevski combined for the shutout as Campbell recorded a pair of saves on the day and improved to 3-1-0 on the year. Lands tallied two saves in the contest.
USD returns to action next Sunday, Sept. 18th with a 5:00 pm match against UCLA at Torero Stadium.
