Toreros open up PFL play Saturday at Jacksonville

GAME #2: The USD Toreros (1-0; 0-0 PFL), under the direction of second year head coach Dale Lindsey, open up their 2014 Pioneer Football League schedule this Saturday, September 13th, with a road game at Jacksonville University (0-1; 0-0 PFL). Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. (Pacific) at newly renovated D.B. Milne Field.

SERIES RECORD: This is the 9th meeting between USD and Jacksonville with the Toreros owning a 5-3 advantage... These two teams did not face off against each other last season... The last meeting was played at Jacksonville on October 20, 2012 with the Toreros earning a 24-7 victory that snapped the Dolphins 16-game home winning streak (longest in FCS at the time)... USD has won two straight in the series, also winning 23-14 back on November 19th, 2011 at Torero Stadium... That victory gave USD a share of the PFL championship with Drake... In games played in Jacksonville, USD is 2-2 overall.

WEBCAST: Saturday's contest will be webcast live with Jack Cronin (play-by-play) calling the action. Cronin's pre-game will begin at 9:50 am (PST) and can be accessed via usdtoreros.com.

A LOOK AHEAD: The Toreros return to Walter J. Zable Field at Torero Stadium on Saturday, September 20th, when they play host to the Princeton Tigers. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm. This will be the season opener for Princeton. USD and Princeton meet up for just the third time with the Tigers leading the all-time series 2-0 (24-17 @ Torero Stadium in 2004; 20-17 @ Princeton in 2005).

TOREROS PICKED FIRST IN PRESEASON PFL COACHES POLL: For the third straight year the Toreros were picked to finish first in the PFL Preseason Coaches Poll. USD received five of a possible 10 first-place votes and 90 of a maximum 100 points. The Toreros were followed by Dayton (82 points), Jacksonville (80), Butler (77), Drake (73), Marist (61), Campbell (38), Morehead State (35), Stetson (30), Davidson (20) and Valparaiso (19). The PFL will feature 11 teams each playing an eight-game schedule to determine the league champion and recipient of the automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA FCS Championship.

TRIO OF CAPTAINS SELECTED: Torero players selected three fifth-year teammates to be 2014 Team Captains - senior safety Troy McClelland (San Diego, Calif.) was named team captain, and senior wide receiver Reggie Bell (Union City, Calif.) and senior linebacker Una Hamala (Inglewood, Calif.) were picked co-captains. Additional players will possibly be selected during the season as game day captains.

TORERO TIDBITS: Saturday's win at Torero Stadium was the team's fourth straight home opening win, all coming against Western New Mexico... The Toreros enter Saturday's PFL opener having won their last nine straight PFL opening games... USD is 2-2 in games played at Jacksonville... The senior receiver tandem of Brandon White and Reggie Bell continue their ascent up the Torero record charts... With his 5 catches for 122 yards and 1 score (74-yard TD), White now has 140 career receptions (#7 all-time) for 1,787 yards (#10 all-time) and 23 TDs (#6 all-time)... White moved ahead of longtime offensive assistant Mike Rish (1,722 yards) in the career yards department... With his 5 receptions for 78 yards and one score (61-yard TD), Bell now has 137 receptions (#8 all-time) for 2,011 yards (#7 all-time) and 18 touchdowns (t-7th all-time)... Bell's 18th career TD reception ties him with Rish (1980-83) and Michael Gasperson (2001-2004)... In this week's Jeff Sagarin - USA Today rankings (thru games of Sept. 7), the Toreros are 160th overall (FCS & FBS combined), 41st among FCS schools, and No. 1 among PFL programs... USD's ranking of 160 puts them ahead of seven FBS programs... In Saturday's win over Western New Mexico it was hard not to see the offensive punch the Toreros will have this season with sophomore QB Keith Williams (203 yards passing, 59 yards rushing) and first year RB and Cal transfer Jonah Hodges (120 yards rushing on 23 carries).

SCOUTING THE DOLPHINS: Jacksonville (0-1) is coming off a bye and this game will be their home opener at newly renovated D.B. Milne Field... The Dolphins opened the 2014 campaign on the road at No. 3 Southeastern Louisiana and came a way with a 44-3 loss on August 30th... QB Kade Bell completed 19-of-50 passes for 149 yards and 0 TDs... Junior WR Andy Jones hauled in 4 passes for 59 yards and senior WR Dorian Guy caught 4 balls for 37 yards... Junior RB Frantz Caudio led the ground attack with 29 yards on 9 carries... JU's only score came on a 33-yard field goal from R-So. kicker Brandon Behr... Defensively the Dolphins were paced by R-Jr. MLB Tre Davis (7 stops) and sophomore LB Grady Redding (6 tackles, 1 forced fumble)... Head Coach Kerwin Bell has 8 starters back on offense that ranked 3rd in the nation with 41.8 points per game... On defense 5 starters return... Jacksonville was picked third in the PFL preseason coaches poll and had 3 players named to the Preseason All-PFL team - WR Andrew Robustelli, DL Maroa White and LB Mike Klein.
