SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 35 University of San Diego men's tennis team opened up their first conference match of the season on a positive note cruising past the University of the Pacific Tigers Saturday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. Not only did the Toreros continue their winning streak at six matches, sophomore Filip Vittek is currently riding a seven-match winning streak in singles.

The Tigers came out the gate strong in doubles - testing the Toreros who have won six-straight doubles points in a row. With the No. 1 and 2 spots staying neck and neck with the Tigers, it was senior Ciaran Fitzgerald and Geoffrey Fosso who were first to get the Toreros on the board. The tandem defeated Tigers' Alex Hamilton and Alex Giannini 8-4 at the No. 3 spot. Although executing a large comeback, the Pacific's Sem Verbeek and Marlon Brand managed to edge out juniors Romain Kalaydjian and Uros Petronijevic 8-6. To decide the doubles point, the remaining match resulted in a tiebreaker. Fifty-fourth ranked junior Jordan Angus and Vittek were the pair to triumph and solidified the point for the Toreros.

"Wasn't our best doubles performance today," head coach Brett Masi expressed after the match. "Even so, we were able to battle and pull through. No. 3 doubles finally got the opportunity to finish a match and got a great win. Although Romain and Uros weren't able to pull their match out, they came back and stayed out there as long as possible which helped Filip and Jordan. Our doubles performance has been key for us this season and the guys have executed well."

It was sophomore Geoffrey Fosso who picked up the first singles match. Fosso cruised past Pacific's Ashwin Sharma 6-1, 6-3 and won his fifth-straight match in a row. Kalaydjian extended the Torero lead to three after a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Tigers' Jose Chamba. Clinching the win for the Toreros was No. 83 Vittek which marked his seventh-straight singles victory (7-5, 6-2).

"Each guy has been working really hard on their strengths," Masi noted in regards to the success his squad has had this season. "What is different now compared to the very beginning of the season is that the guys have game plans. These game plans have heightened their strengths even more. Filip is a perfect example of this. As a freshman it is hard to find your style. Now, with Filip's experience, he has played to his strengths and it clearly shows."

Rounding out the match was Fitzgerald who took down Tigers' Barbardo Oliveira 6-2, 7-6(4) and Angus, who defeated Alex Hamilton 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-2. The Toreros sole loss of the day came at the No. 1 spot as No. 82 Petronijevic fell in three sets to Pacific's Miguel Diaz.

"These stretch of home matches has been great for us," Masi said. "The guys see now who they are as a team have become very comfortable competing. Next week we have another great opportunity against a top 25 team and I know our guys are ready for the challenge."
