SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The USD men's soccer team (1-0-0) opened the 2015 season with a convincing 3-0 win over No. 16 Cal Friday evening at Torero Stadium. The match was scoreless at halftime, but the Toreros scored two goals in the first ten minutes of the second half and never looked back. Transfers Djordje Babic and Marvin Schmiege scored the first two goals, and then senior Torrey DeArmas put the match out of reach with a 73rd minute goal.

The first half was tightly contested and back and forth. The Toreros attempted seven first half shots to the Golden Bears' six, but there were only three combined shots coming on goal. Cal had their best opportunity in the 14th minute when Torero keeper Thomas Olsen came off the back line to deflect a cross away, the ball then caromed right to Trevor Haberkorn, who had a look at open net, but missed his shot wide right.

After a coming off the bench in the first half, Babic earned the start in the second half and put the Toreros on the board with a 50th minute goal. Schmiege had a shot blocked from the right wing and the deflection came right to Babic's feet and he launched a strike from the top of the box and into the back of the net.

Five minutes later, it was Schmiege's turn. DeArmas tried to split two defenders in the box and had the ball poked away right to Schmiege, who connected from 18 yards out to give USD a 2-0 lead.

With the level of physicality picking up, Cal's Paul Salcedo received a yellow card in the 58th minute. Then in the 70th minute, Joshua Morton drew a red card for a hard tackle from behind on DeArmas, forcing Cal to play a man down or the remainder of the match.

Just three minutes later, DeArmas put the match out of reach. After Michael Turner lofted him a through ball, DeArmas had a one-on-one with the Cal keeper, Alex Mangels, who charged the ball. DeArmas played a nice chip shot over Mangels' head to give USD an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

The Toreros finished with 16 shots, putting six on frame. Cal had 13 shots with four coming on goal. The Golden Bear's held an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks, but couldn't convert.

Thomas Olsen, last year's WCC Freshman of the Year, earned the shutout. He had four saves, and two of them were spectacular diving stops. Cal's Mangels had three saves.

The Toreros return to action on Monday when they host UC Riverside at 7:30 p.m.
