DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 19 University of San Diego Men's tennis team (3-0) defeated the No. 26 Vanderbilt Commodores (3-1) 4-0 on Saturday in the first round of competition at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

"I'm really proud of the way the boys scratched and clawed to beat this talented Vandy squad." Head Coach Ryan Keckley said. "We came out firing in both doubles and singles."

The Toreros did just that by starting with two wins in doubles competition. Joshua Page and Uros Petronijevic took a 6-1 victory over Ryan Smith and Pen Binet in the number two spot. No. 7 Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek followed that with a 6-4 victory in the top spot over Rhys Johnson and Cameron Klinger.

Jaan Kononov and Romain Kalaydjian trailed Daniel Valent and Baker Newman 3-4 before USD clinched the doubles point.

In singles play it was more of the same with Filip Vittek earning USD's first win in the three-spot 6-3, 6-4 against Baker Newman. No. 34 Jordan Angus topped Johnson 6-1, 7-6 (3) for the Toreros third point and Joshua Page clinched the match 6-2, 7-5 over Smith in the six spot.

Ranked opponents No. 35 Petronijevic and No. 64 Valent split the first two sets before play was stopped. No. 82 Kalaydjian was leading in the second set over Klinger while No. 58 Kononov was trailing Vanderbilt's Kris Yee.

The Toreros will face the No. 23 Duke Blue Devils tomorrow in the final round. The winner will advance to the 2016 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship February 12-15 hosted by the University of Virginia. Duke did not play on Saturday after No. 27 California was unable to make their flight to Durham due to severe winter weather in the area.

The Toreros are 1-1 against the Blue Devils all-time. The last meeting came in 1993 when USD won 8-1.
