SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Megan Sabbatini pitched a two-hit shutout to help the Toreros (3-4) knock off Texas Tech 6-0 Friday afternoon at San Diego State. Mary Grabowski paced the offense, going 3-4 with a pair of RBI.
The Toreros opened up an early lead, scoring two runs in the first, third, and fifth. Senior Tatum Schultz led off the game with a single to left field and was sacrificed to second on an Olivia Sandusky bunt. Kailey Hill then hit a fielder's choice, but Schultz was able to score on an error by the Texas Tech third baseman. Hill eventually would score on a Mary Grabowski RBI single to right field.
In the third, USD had three straight extra base hits to plate two more runs. After a one out triple by Kailey Hill, freshman Lauren Kane and Grabowski each hit doubles to extend the Toreros' lead to 4-0.
The Red Raiders mounted their only threat in the bottom of the fourth inning. They got their first hit of the game on a Jessica Hartwell single, and then had runners on second and third with one out following a USD error. Megan Sabbatini then struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam and preserve the shutout.
In the fifth, USD took advantage of a couple Texas Tech defensive miscues. After the first two batters were retired, Kane reached on an error. Grabowski and Taylor Spence hit back-to-back singles to load the bases, and then Lauren Berriatua grounded out to the second baseman, who committed an error, allowing two Toreros to score.
Megan Sabbatini (2-2) earned her second win of the season, striking out five and walking just two. Texas Tech's Dominque Alocer took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings.
The Toreros return to action Saturday when they play South Dakota at 2:00 p.m. at San Diego State.
