May 25, 2016 TULSA, Okla. -- After losing the opening set, Uros Petronijevic rallied to knock off LSU's No.44 Jordan Daigle 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship.
"We knew today was going to be a battle, and it lived up to our expectations." Head Coach Ryan Keckley said after the match. "It was first strike tennis in the first half of this two hour 45 minute match. Uros had three set points in the first set, but Daigle came up with some big shots and finished it off in the breaker."
Petronijevic's first set was back-and-forth. Uki took a 2-0 and 4-2 lead but Daigle was able to battle back to take a 5-4 lead. Petronijevic, who holds a No. 56 national ranking, rallied to win the next two points, but Daigle forced the tiebreaker where he won 7-2.
"Once the 20 mph winds calmed down, Uki adjusted his strategy and really hit his stride," Keckley said. "He competed well down the home stretch when fitness really came in to play."
The second set was also tightly contested throughout, but the senior from Serbia prevailed with a 6-4 win to force a third set. In the deciding set, Petronijevic opened up a 4-1 lead and held on for the win. This is the second straight year Petronijevic's first round NCAA match was decided in three sets.
Petronijevic gets his first career NCAA win and the first for a Torero since 2011 (Dean Jackson). He will face Oklahoma's No. 25 Axel Alvarez Llamas Thursday at 10:30 a.m. PT. Alvarez Llamas defeated No. 17 Austin Smith of Georgia 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 Wednesday.
"I am proud of how Uki handled the adversity," Keckley said. "I am excited for the opportunity tomorrow brings for these Three Toreros."
The Toreros' double team of Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek kick off the Doubles Championships Thursday in Tulsa when they face Virginia Tech's 21st-ranked duo of Andreas Bjerrehus & Joao Monteiro.
