Toreros Sweep the Competition

SAN DIEGO - The women's tennis team remains unbeaten after the first day of play at the SDSU Fall Tennis Classic II. They began play Friday morning at 9 a.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center against SDSU, Air Force, Utah, Colorado, Columbia, Cal Poly, Liberty and CSU Fresno.

Leading off the Toreros in doubles play was Gemma Garcia and Carolin Nonnenmacher, Maria-Paula Torres and Sophia Chow, and Nicole Anderson and Kati Kukaras. Each duo swept past the competition to advance to the next round of championship play. Garcia and Nonnenmacher won their set against Utah with a 6-3 score. Torres and Chow also defeated their Colorado competition with a 6-3 set. Anderson and Kukares played a hard fought battle against Utah but ultimately overcame the competition 7-6 (5).

The Toreros also competed in singles play, soaring over all of their competitors with every one of them continuing onto the next round of championship play. Nonnenmacher kept her audience on their toes with a close first set of 7-6 (3) but destroying her opponent in the second set 6-0. Morales, Chow, and Garcia all maintained their solid leads on the competition and won their matches in two easy sets each. Torres kept things interesting landing her a 7-6 (3) set, then finished off her Utah competition 6-4 in the second set.

USD will continue play Saturday morning at Aztec Tennis Center.
