USD Women's Tennis Claims WCC Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year and More Awards Following Historic Season

SAN DIEGO — Recognition poured in for San Diego Women's Tennis as the team captured WCC end-of-year awards featuring Coach, Player, and Freshman of the Year honors, alongside eight other all-conference awards on the courts and two all-academic following a historic year for the program.

Senior Claudia de las Heras won her first WCC Player of the Year award, star first-year Hannah Read was labeled Co-Freshman of the Year, and Head Coach Nadia Abdala collected her second Coach of the Year award in her third year at the helm of the program. It is the first time in program history that the Toreros have merited each of the conference's 'of-the-year' awards.

After eight seasons as an assistant coach for the Torero Women's Tennis program, Abdala was promoted to head coach in 2022 and has now since won two WCC Coach of the Year awards in a span of three seasons. In those three seasons, she has led USD to a 41-29 overall record, but most notably a 16-3 conference record that has converted the Toreros to a perennial contender in the WCC, including winning the program's first ever WCC Regular Season Title. In 2025, the team was WCC co-champs with a record of 5-1, conference tournament runners-up by a narrow margin, and a final ITA ranking of No. 41 – just missing the NCAA Tournament – all while battling and navigating injuries up and down the entire seven-player roster all year long.

Newly-appointed WCC Player of the Year de las Heras finished the dual season with an 11-4 record and a win streak of six matches, including clinching the deciding point in a 4-3 win over No. 27 Pepperdine that won USD it's first WCC Regular Season Championship and first victory over the Waves since 2012. She was back-to-back WCC Player of the Week for the weeks of April 8 and 15. De las Heras is the third Torero to win the honor, the program's sixth award of the sort and first since 2005. It's a second straight All-WCC First Team honor for the Barcelona native, also meriting second team in 2023.

Read was named the WCC Co-Freshman of the Year and to the all-conference second team after leading the team in wins with a 12-6 dual season record. She was also 10-5 in the fall, including nine of her first 10 in collegiate tennis, and entered the ITA rankings for the first time in her young career at No. 105 in singles. Read becomes the first Torero to win WCC Freshman of the Year since Solymar Colling in 2019.

De las Heras and Evans combined at No. 1 doubles as a duo tabbed First Team All-WCC. The tandem persevered to a 7-3 record together, 5-0 against conference opponents, and an ITA national ranking of No. 52, a high of 19th nationally. The pair was the WCC Doubles Team of the Week for the week of April 8 after a 6-1 win and a 6-0 win that saw them drop only three points of 27 on main court against Pacific.

Evans also earned All-WCC Singles Second Team honors, playing out of the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions. Evans fought through an injury the whole season, including most of conference play, however, posting an 8-3 dual record, 2-0 during the conference regular season. The Ennis, Texas is the ITA No. 36 in singles, a season high of 26th nationally, and led the Toreros in ranked wins. She had a tremendous fall en route to her first NCAA Singles Championships qualification, where she reached the second round only to fall to the eventual National Champion in three sets.

Sophomore Kristina Nordikyan, who mostly played at No. 3 singles, earned her first career all-conference recognition as All-WCC Singles Honorable Mention. The Panorama City, Calif. native and Armernian international went 4-2 during WCC regular season play and also contributed to key non-conference wins over No. 32 UC Santa Barbara and Penn.

For their efforts in the classroom in addition to on the courts, De las Heras, an International Business and Marketing double-major merited a WCC All-Academic Team selection while Nordikyan, a Psychology major, warranted WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention.
