ASU Thunderbird Day One

Tempe, AZ â€" The USD women's tennis team is competing in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational this weekend on the campus of Arizona State University. It was a tough first day in singles with all six players dropping their first round matches in the main draw of the very strong 32-player field. Three of the six matches were decided in three sets. Gemma Garcia and Carolin Nonnenmacher teamed up to defeat Cal's doubles tandem of Jasie Dunk and Audrey Mayer, 6-2.

Carolin Nonnenmacher battled 4th seed Sasa Klanecek of ASU three sets before falling 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Gemma Garcia dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to 3rd seed Maria Smith from Cal. Nicole Anderson won her second set but was eventually beat by Jaclyn Switkes of Illinois, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. Kati Kukaras won her first set before Allison Miller of Notre Dame rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory. Alessia Dario of Fresno State defeated Sophia Chow by identical 6-2 scores. Maria Paula Torres dropped 6-3, 6-3 sets to Chiara Tomasetti of Northern Arizona.

In the singles consolation bracket, Sophia Chow and Maria Paula Torres earned victories. Chow downed Camila Romero of Oklahoma, 7-5, 6-2. Torres defeated Jade Hilton of Illinois, 6-4, 6-4.

The Toreros will continue singles and doubles play on Saturday and Sunday.
