LONG BEACH, Calif. - August Holmgren won his opening match to highlight San Diego's first day at the USA F2 Futures tournament.
Holmgren defeated Victor Krustev 7-5, 6-3, to advance to the second round of the qualifying round of 64.
"Congrats to August on a good win," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "He settled into the match nicely and played some good tennis. Tomorrow will be a great test for him."
David Norfeldt made his Toreros debut and had a strong showing but fell to Indiana's Zac Brodney, 6-2, 6-1.
Joel Gamerov also competed on the first day and dropped a 6-2, 6-2, decision to Indiana's Raheel Manji, who was ranked No. 125 in the country.
"It was great to see these guys in action again," said Keckley. "It was clear we needed matches as we were not as sharp or match-tough as we were in the fall. We have some work to do in the upcoming weeks to prepare for a good UC Irvine team. We will get back to the grind and put in the work to prepare for Jan. 19."
Play will continue at the USA F2 Futures on Sunday.
