Coach Ryan Keckley about Joel Gamerov:
“Joel’s a team guy first. He isn’t motivated by individual goals or ego but by the team’s results. If it pushes the team further, he’ll buy in and make sure it happens. He understands the big picture of what USD tennis represents. He’s an incredible competitor and reads the court as well as anyone I’ve ever coached. I’ve learned as much from him as he’s learned from me.”
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
- 2019 All-American in doubles (with August Holmgren)
- Became the first doubles team (with August Holmgren) to earn All-America honors, advance to the NCAA Championships quarterfinals, and win two matches in the postseason tournament in USD program history
- Two-time All-WCC first team in doubles (with August Holmgren; 2018, 2019)
- Two-time All-WCC honorable mention in singles (2018, 2019)
SENIOR (2019-20)
- WCC Singles Player of the Week (Feb. 4, 2020)
- WCC Doubles Player of the Week with August Holmgren (Feb. 25, 2020)
- Was a perfect 10-0 in singles dual matches, the only Torero to go undefeated in singles
- 6-0 at No. 3
- 3-0 at No. 2
- 2-0 in WCC singles duals
- Defeated No. 92 Justin Schlageter of Oklahoma for his only ranked win in as many opportunities of the season (6-3, 6-1)
- 5-2 in doubles duals matches, pairing up with August Holmgren for all seven decisions
- 3-2 at the No. 1 position
JUNIOR (2018-19)
- All-American in doubles (with August Holmgren)
- Became the first doubles team (with August Holmgren) to earn All-America honors, advance to the NCAA Championships quarterfinals, and win two matches in the postseason tournament in USD program history
- All-WCC first team in doubles (with August Holmgren)
- All-WCC honorable mention in singles
- WCC All-Tournament Team at No. 1 doubles (with August Holmgren)
- During the fall season, earned a bid to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in doubles with August Holmgren after winning the Oracle ITA Regionals in Malibu
- In singles, compiled a 16-10 overall record, 11-7 dual match record, and a 5-2 WCC record
- Went 4-3 in the No. 3 position and 7-4 in the No. 4 position in singles dual matches
- Went 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents in singles
- In doubles, played a majority of matches with August Holmgren and compiled a 20-8 overall record, 12-6 dual match record, and 4-1 WCC record
- Went 5-4 at the No. 1 position, 6-2 at the No. 2 position, and 1-0 at the No. 3 position in doubles dual matches
- Went 3-3 against nationally ranked opponents in doubles
SOPHOMORE (2017-18)
- All-WCC first team in doubles (with August Holmgren)
- All-WCC honorable mention in singles
- Led USD with a 16-7 record in singles dual matches and a 6-2 record in WCC play
- Finished the year with a 21-11 overall singles record
- Played a majority of the singles season at No. 3 and went 10-4
- Won each of his final six singles matches of the season
- Led San Diego in doubles play with partner, August Holmgren, with a 17-9 overall record, a14-8 record in dual matches and 5-2 record in WCC play
- Compiled an overall doubles record of 21-12 on the year
FRESHMAN (2016-17)
- Went 23-11 in singles competition, 18-5 in dual matches and was undefeated at 6-0 in conference play
- At the No. 4 position he went 5-3 and at the No. 5 spot he went 12-2
- In doubles play he ended with a 15-14 overall record, 11-11 in dual matches and 6-2 in WCC play
- He competed in the No. 2 position for most of the season
PERSONAL
- Son of Marie and Ami Gamerov
- He grew up in Orebro, Sweden and attended Rudbeck High school
- Communication studies major
- He choses USD because of the great coaching staff, perfect locaction and tight-knit tennis team
- In his down time he enjoys watching and playing other sports
