Toreros Cruise to Two Victories

SAN DIEGO - San Diego erupted for 15 runs on 21 hits in two games Saturday to earn a pair of victories against Campbell and Cal State Bakersfield.

The Toreros (4-1) opened the day with a 5-0 victory against the Camels (3-2) and finished with a 10-2 win against the Roadrunners (0-4) in five innings.

USD continued to get stellar performances from its freshman pitchers who both threw their second complete games in as many days.

Halle Kyler (2-0) got the start against Campbell and shut them out, permitting just three hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Hannah Boos followed with an impressive performance of her own against CSUB, allowing just two runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

The Toreros offense made sure they provided their freshman duo with plenty of run support, batting .396 on the day with a .547 slugging percentage.

Kailey Hill paced USD's offense, going 4-for-5 on the day with a home run and two RBIs. Sara Silveyra went 4-for-6 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs. Lindsay Clare led the Toreros with four RBIs as part of a 3-for-6 day.

USD scored in four-of-six offensive innings against Campbell and got started early. Taylor Spence led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Katie Vretzos. Silveyra brought Spence home on an RBI-single to give the Toreros an early 1-0 lead.

Silveyra doubled the lead herself in the second inning with a towering solo home run to left field.

Lauren Kane doubled in the fourth inning and came home when Clare singled to center field to put the Toreros up, 3-0.

Hill put the finishing touch on the 5-0 victory with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

The Toreros had to come from behind against CSUB after the Roadrunners jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. CSUB loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning but USD was able to limit the damage and permit just one run.

The Roadrunners doubled their lead in the third inning when a sacrifice fly brought in a second run.

The Toreros responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, producing eight runs on eight hits along with a bit of help from a pair of Roadrunners errors.

Clare positioned the Toreros for the run-rule victory with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to put USD up, 10-2.

Boos shut the door on the Roadrunners in the top of the fifth inning to seal the decision for the Toreros.

USD will look to continue its momentum Sunday when it concludes its opening weekend at noon PT against CSUB.
