SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - San Diego split a doubleheader against Dayton on Friday to open play at the Gaucho Classic hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
Both games were decided by a score of, 3-2, with the Toreros (7-7) winning the first and the Flyers (4-5) taking the second.
USD snapped a four-game losing streak in the first game. Taylor Spence paced the Toreros offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
Halle Kyler (4-2) got the start in the circle and limited Dayton to two runs on five hits and one walk in 4.0 innings. Delaney Heller came in as relief and did not allow a hit or any runs in the final 3.0 innings.
Trailing 1-0 after two innings, the Toreros got on the board in the third inning when Hannah Gilliland tripled and came home on an RBI-single by Taylor Spence.
Dayton responded in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead, 2-1.
USD generated the deciding runs in the fifth inning when it loaded the bases with one out. Sara Silveyra drew an RBI-walk to level the score at 2-2. Kailey Hill followed with an RBI-single to left field to give the Toreros a 3-2 lead it would not relinquish.
The Flyers moved a runner to third with two outs in the sixth inning and drew a leadoff walk in the seventh but the Toreros were able to get out of the jams and preserve its 3-2 lead for the win.
USD racked up eight hits but managed just two runs in the second game against Dayton. The Toreros were ultimately undone by a big sixth inning by the Flyers.
Spence stayed hot at the plate with a 2-for-4 showing with an RBI. Gilliland also went 2-for-4, while Shelbi Evans went 2-for-3.
Heller picked up where she left off in the first game and held the Flyers to three runs - two earned - on five hits and one walk. Hannah Boos entered the game in relief and allowed just two hits and no walks.
USD held a 2-0 lead through five innings on an RBI-single by Spence and a sacrifice fly by Madison Casiano. However, the Flyers rallied for three runs in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.
Gilliland led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single but the Toreros could not find the hits needed to bring her around and tie the game.
USD continues play Saturday with a noon PT matchup against Dayton and a 2 p.m. game against UC Santa Barbara.
