SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - San Diego split a pair of games Saturday at the Gaucho Classic, defeating Dayton but falling to UC Santa Barbara in extra innings.
The Toreros (8-8) earned a 6-3 victory against the Flyers (4-6) in the first game of the day but could not hold on late against the Gauchos (7-7) and fell 5-4 in eight innings.
USD's offense got going early against Dayton and the Toreros racked up 13 hits to score in four-of-seven innings. Taylor Spence and Sara Silveyra both went 3-for-4 on the game, while Lauren Kane (2-for-3) and Hannah Gilliland (2-for-4) also had nice days at the plate. Kailey Hill and Kane provided two RBIs apiece, and Silveyra scored a team-high three runs.
It was a team effort in the circle for USD with three pitchers contributing. Halle Kyler got the start and permitted three runs on four hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Hannah Boos came in for 2/3 of an inning but picked up the victory. Delaney Heller finished the final 3.0 innings and did not allow any runs or walks, permitting just two hits.
The Toreros struck early with three runs in the first two innings. USD's lead disappeared in the bottom of the fourth when the Flyers struck for three runs to level the score at 3-3.
The Toreros responded immediately with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to retake the lead, 5-3. USD added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and shut down Dayton in the bottom half of the inning to secure the 6-3 decision.
The Toreros nearly swept the day but gave up a one-run lead in the seventh inning and a sacrifice fly in the eighth as they fell to UCSB, 5-4.
Spence continued her hot day at the plate and went 2-for-3, while Hill also produced a multi-hit performance (2-for-4).
The Toreros trio of pitchers from the first game all made appearances in the second as well. Heller got the start and went 1 1/3 innings, giving up two runs - one earned - on four hits and no walks. Boos finished the final 4.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits and no walks.
With the score knotted at 3-3 in the top of the seventh, Spence led off with a single and advanced to second on an error by the Gauchos left fielder.
Shannon McKeon doubled in the next at-bat to bring in Spence and give the Toreros a 4-3 lead. The lead would not last, however, as the Gauchos loaded the bases with one out and tied the game, 4-4, with an RBI-walk.
The Toreros were able to get out of the jam and secured the final two outs of the inning to send the game to extras.
With a Kane placed on second as part of the international tie-breaker rule, Shelbi Evans dropped a bunt to move Kane to third base with one out. The Toreros were unable to bring her home in the next two at-bats.
After a wild pitch moved UCSB's runner from second to third, R Cohen hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brough in the winning run for the Gauchos.
