SAN DIEGO - Halle Kyler made her collegiate debut in the circle and held Campbell to one run in 5 1/3 innings but San Diego was unable to capitalize and fell, 3-1, in the season opener Thursday night.
Kyler was electric in the circle after entering the game in relief during the second inning. She racked up seven strikeouts and permitted just one run on two hits and two walks.
Fellow freshman, Katie Vretzos, also had a quality debut for the Toreros, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, a stolen base and the Toreros (0-1) lone RBI of the game.
Preseason All-WCC selection, Taylor Spence, chipped in a pair of hits, while senior Sarah Stone drew a pair of walks, stole a base and scored the only run of the game for USD.
Madison Casiano provided the defensive highlight of the game in the top of the sixth inning when she blocked a ball in the dirt, picked it up and fired a perfect throw to second to get a Camels runner trying to advance.
A two-run home run by Campbell's (1-0) Lizabeth McCurry in the second inning was all they would need to secure the victory. The Camels added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Caroline Smith led off with a double and worked her way around the bases to put Campbell up, 3-1.
San Diego had its chances throughout the game, including a bases-loaded with no outs situation in the bottom of the fifth inning. Vretzos delivered a bloop-RBI single but that was all the Toreros could manage as the next three batters were retired to end the rally.
Spence led off the bottom of the seventh inning and moved to second on a wild pitch but USD was unable to keep the rally going and left her stranded.
The Camel's pitcher, Megan Richards, held the Toreros to one run on six hits and four walks while racking up nine strikeouts in a complete-game performance.
USD will look to bounce back with a pair of games Friday, beginning with Cal State Bakersfield at 3:30 p.m. and Campbell at 6 p.m.
