SAN DIEGO - San Diego earned a pair of victories, including a top-25 win, when it defeated No. 24/25 USC Upstate and South Dakota on Saturday at the Wildcat Invitational.
The Toreros (13-13) earned its first top-25 win of the season with a 3-2 victory against the Spartans (18-4). USD completed the day with a 4-1 win against the Coyotes (8-19).
The Toreros were outhit 10-2 by the Spartans but made the most of their at-bats and relied on its defense to secure the victory.
Trailing 1-0, USD did all of its offensive damage in the third inning when Hannah Gilliland delivered an RBI-single to right field to tie the game at 1-1. Kailey Hill followed with her team-leading fifth home run of the year to put the Toreros up, 3-2.
USC Upstate managed a second run in the sixth inning but that was as close as it would get.
Delaney Heller (5-5) got the start and limited the Spartans to one run on six hits and one walk with one strikeout in 4.0 innings. Halle Kyler came earned the first save of her career, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing one run on four hits and no walks with one strikeout.
Hannah Boos pitched a complete-game two-hitter to lead the Toreros to its second win of the day against South Dakota.
Boos was electric in the circle, permitting just one run on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
All of the game's scoring took place in the first inning with the Coyotes posting one run in the top of the first and the Toreros responding with four in the bottom half of the inning.
Gilliland continued her productive day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run. Shelbi Evans accounted for half of USD's RBIs with a two-run homer.
The Toreros conclude play Sunday at 10 a.m. PT against Wisconsin.
