SAN DIEGO - Halle Kyler had a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings but it was clutch hitting in extra innings that sealed a, 4-3, victory against Fairfield on Wednesday night.
Kyler was electric in the circle, retiring the first 17 batters before a two-out single by the Stags' (6-10) Drew Westford snuck through the left side of the infield. Kyler kept Fairfield scoreless through all seven innings but surrendered a pair of runs in the eighth.
Kyler allowed just two runs on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. Delaney Heller (5-6) came in as relief and permitted one run on one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.
Lindsay Clare and Hannah Gilliland provided the late-inning heroics for the Toreros. After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the eighth, Taylor Spence drew a walk and Hannah Gilliland was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Sara Silveyra moved to duo to second and third with one out.
Clare delivered a two-RBI bloop-double to right field to bring in Spence and Gilliland and knot the score at, 2-2.
Fairfield responded with another run in the top of the ninth inning to retake the lead, 3-2.
The Toreros would not be deterred, however, and Frankie Perales and Savannah Shields produced back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom half of the inning. Spence dropped a perfect bunt for a single to load the bases with one out.
Gilliland stepped to the plate and hammered a double down the line in left field to bring in the winning runs. She finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.
USD has won four games in a row and will look to continue its streak when it heads to Cal State Bakersfield this weekend for three games.
