LOS ANGELES – Gui Osorio provided the clinching point as San Diego swept Ole Miss, 4-0, to open the ITA Kickoff weekend at UCLA.
Â
The Toreros (2-0) made quick work of the Rebels (2-2), going 2-0 in doubles and winning each singles match in straight sets. USD will take on No. 7 UCLA on Saturday at 3 p.m. PT.
Â
"I was really proud of our overall performance," said head coach
Ryan Keckley. "We looked like a team that had been in this situation before. We leaned on our experience and each other, and it showed during the big moments today."
Â
Osorio and
Nico Borter provided the first victory of the day with a 6-1 victory against Filip Kraljevic and Tim Sandkaulen.
Guus Koevermans and
David Norfeldt clinched the doubles point by beating Jan Soren Hain and Simon Junk, 6-2.
Â
It is the second straight victory for both USD doubles teams after wins last week against Utah State.
Â
"We came out in doubles and captured the momentum early," said Keckley. "We put our foot on the gas and didn't look back. Nico and Gui continue to play solid complimentary doubles. Guus and David are really starting to build some confidence in one another which is great to see this early in the season."
Joel Gamerov led the Toreros in dual match victories last year and was often the first to conclude his matches throughout the season. He picked up where he left off and defeated Karlo Kranic 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 to put the Toreros up, 2-0.
Â
"I can't say enough about Joel," said Keckley. "He did an incredible job of staying focused and adding that next point to the board. He has been a rock for this team for the past three years and is a big contributor to the success we have had."
Â
Koevermans followed shortly after with a 6-3, 6-4, win at the No. 5 spot against Soren Hain. It is the first dual-match singles victory for Koevermans this season and first since 2017 after missing the 2018 season due to injury.
Â
Osorio provided the finishing touches in the No. 1 position, defeating Sandkaulen, 7-5, 6-4. Osorio was tied with Sandkaulen, 5-5, in the first set but rallied for two sets to earn the decision and take the momentum of the match.
Â
"Tomorrow will be a great test for this squad," said Keckley. "We are very familiar with UCLA and look forward to the opportunity to get better."
