SAN DIEGO - San Diego women's basketball is set to return to the Jenny Craig Pavilion to face Portland and No. 17 Gonzaga for its home WCC opener.
Â
The Pilots are coming off a loss to No. 17 Gonzaga for their sole WCC contest so far this season. The Zags are currently on a 10-game winning streak.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
• The Toreros recorded their first WCC win against LMU on the road after a loss in Malibu to Pepperdine.
•
Sydney Hunter and
Myah Pace were potent for San Diego's offense as Hunter recorded her first double-double of the season and Pace notched a new career-high 20 points.
• San Diego had four players in double figures including
Madison Pollock who tacked on 13 points on the afternoon and
Jordyn Edwards who contributed 10.
• The Toreros never trailed after building an early lead in the first quarter. San Diego entered the second quarter with a 10-point advantage over the Lions, scoring 16 of its 19 points close to the basket.
• San Diego recorded 15 assists off 26 made baskets in the contest, led by Edward's six assists.
• The defense held the Lions to only 17.6 percent from beyond the arc and allowed no three pointers in the entire first half.
Â
THE COMPLETE GAME
• Hunter's performance against LMU marked a new benchmark for the Toreros.
• The junior guard played all 40 minutes in the contest, a first for San Diego this season.
• Hunter accounted for 12 of San Diego's 41 rebounds, 10 of which were on the defensive side of the ball. Her efforts off the glass limited LMU to only 12 second chance points in the contest.
• The rebounding mark also matches her career-high set back in 2018.
• Hunter recorded a stat line in every category except blocks and three pointers. Hunter was near perfection from the line shooting 3-4 on the afternoon.
• Hunter ended the month-long drought in double-doubles for San Diego, as Pollock recorded the last double-double effort against Texas Tech on November 30.
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PORTLAND
• San Diego owns the all-time series against the Pilots at 42-34. The Toreros will look to break a two-game losing streak after dropping both contests in the 2018-19 season.
• The Toreros are 4-1 at home against Portland over the last five seasons.
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST NO. 17 GONZAGA
• Gonzaga holds advantage in the all-time series against the Toreros, 45-23. San Diego will face a seven-game losing streak against the Zags who are currently ranked in the AP Top 25.
• San Diego's last win against the WCC-rival came on the road in the 2015-16 season after a three-pointer by Malina Hood with 27 seconds remaining to lift the Toreros to a 58-57 victory.
Â
NEW CAREER MARKS
• In San Diego's first conference win of the season, multiple players reached new career-highs.
• Pace beat her previous career mark in points set back in the middle of December against Washington by one point.
• The contest marked Pace's seventh game reaching double figures this season, eclipsing the five contests she reached double-digits last season before being sidelined with an injury.
• Hunter set a new career assist mark (5) and matched her rebounding high with 12 set back in the 2017-18 season.
• Redshirt junior Edwards also matched her career assists mark with six.
• Along with the three guards, forward
Patricia Brossmann recorded three blocks against LMU to set a season and career high.
Â
POINTS IN THE PAINT
• San Diego's offensive efforts have been led primarily in the paint.
• In WCC play alone, the Toreros have scored at least 35 points near the basket in each contest.
• The offense has been efficient off the glass to create opportunities as well, recording double figures in second chance points in both WCC contests.
• San Diego currently ranks as one of the best in rebounding margin in the conference.
