SAN DIEGO – The road ahead for San Diego became clearer with the release of the 2019-20 conference matchups, as announced Thursday by the West Coast Conference.
Â
The Toreros 16-game WCC schedule includes home-and-away games against Gonzaga, Saint Mary's, BYU, Pacific, Pepperdine, Portland and Santa Clara.
Â
USD will play its home-only game against San Francisco and its away-only game at Loyola Marymount.
Â
Dates and times of all games for the 2019-20 season will be announced at a later date.
Â
The Toreros are coming off their second consecutive 20-win season in 2018-19 – the first time the program has accomplished the feat since moving to Division I during the 1979-80 season. USD's 21 wins last season were the most since winning 22 during the 2007-8 season.
Â
The Toreros competed in a postseason tournament for the second straight season, also a first in for the program. USD earned an at-large berth to the NIT and competed in the tournament for the first time in school history. The Toreros were the only WCC team selected to the NIT.
Â
The WCC switched to a 16-game schedule in 2018-19 to demonstrate the league-wide commitment by WCC Presidents and Athletic Directors to adopt an innovative approach to advance men's basketball on the national stage as a multiple NCAA-bid conference.
Â
The 16-game home and away opponents for the upcoming season are based on a conference formula including 2017-18 team RPI and the 2018-19 team NET rankings, last year's WCC Tournament seedings, and a spring survey of the league's 10 head coaches.
Â
The 2020 WCC Basketball Championships will take place March 5-10 at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
