Five With Yauhen Massalski

The rising senior is rehabbing his injury and adjusting to stay-at-home life

More than three weeks into the stay-at-home orders issued across California due to the coronavirus pandemic, rising senior Yauhen Massalski checks in with five answers to five questions to see how he's adjusting to the new way of life, especially as he tries to bounce back from an injury that cut his junior season short in 2019-20.

1. What does your "normal" day look like right now?
My typical day is pretty simple. Especially right now not being able to go to the gym or school. I wake up around 8 am – it's the latest I can sleep in (people that know me will understand). Then first things first, I talk to my mom, check-in with our athletic trainer Eli Bisnett-Cobb, and check on how things are going back home (in Belarus) to make sure everyone is okay. After that, I work out for the first time, do my rehab, make breakfast, and then "go" to classes. Throughout the day I do my school work and try to squeeze in lunch because with the school schedule, sometimes you just forget about it. Once classes are done, I work out for the second time and then make dinner. In the evening, it's all about video games and checking in with my family again, because they are just waking up. I check on my family a lot because the biggest challenge right now is thinking this could be the year where I do not get to see them. Last thing I try to do is read a book before going to bed.

2. How do you rehab your injury given the circumstances?
I talk to Eli every day. He sends me the rehab exercises to do at home and twice a week, I go to the training room to meet with him one-on-one. Shout-out to my guy and big thanks to him for taking care of me during this time.

3. What is one skill or hobby you've picked up since being asked to practice social distancing?
I have spent a lot of time looking into things I can do at home to improve myself as a person, such as yoga, meditation or reading. And as a player, I try to find ways to improve myself by seeing how to work on my body and what to eat. I love to cook right now.

4. Best show, movie, music or book recommendation?
"Sherlock" on Netflix is the best show by far, in my opinion. I also watch all the "Kobe Detail" episodes on ESPN+ as well as old college games. As for movies, I have to say "Ready Player One" is a great movie to watch right now.

5. Best moment for you so far in the last three weeks?
Knowing that people I care about are healthy. And hopefully (today) after getting my x-ray, which is going to be good since I should be able to walk again.
