SAN DIEGO – Grace Frohling and
Harrison Kingsley were named the Torero Newcomers of the Year as USD Athletics continued its week-long announcement of the annual Celebration of Excellence Awards on Thursday.
Frohling, an opposite on the WCC champion volleyball team, broke out in a big way in her freshman season. The Los Angeles product was named the WCC Freshman of the Year, AVCA Pacific South Region Freshman of the Year, AVCA All-America honorable mention, AVCA All-Region honorable mention, All-WCC First Team, and WCC All-Freshman Team after she had 264 kills and 27 aces in 2019. She appeared in all 28 matches for the Toreros and helped the team reach the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight year and 23rd in program history.
Frohling was selected among eight nominees for the award.
Kingsley, a sophomore transfer, played a major role in turning around a USD golf team that had the biggest stroke improvement year-over-year in the country. He had three top-10 finishes in the fall, led the team in average score (70.80), and helped the squad notch three top-five finishes in tournaments – a single-season first for the program since 2014-15. The Murrieta, Calif. product had his best finish at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational, where he finished tied for second after carding a 15-under 198 in the three rounds. It was one of four tournaments in which he had a score of even par or better.
