INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Senior guard Sydney Hunter has been selected to represent the West Coast Conference as a member of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Student-Athlete Engagement Group, the NCAA announced on Monday.
 
The group will serve as an amplifying voice for women's basketball on key initiatives, legislation and various issues. The group was formed in collaboration with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and is the first of its kind in the NCAA.
 
"This is a great opportunity for Sydney to be involved at the NCAA level with the decision-making process for women's basketball moving forward," said head coach Cindy Fisher. "It is important that our student-athletes' voices are heard and that we are taking action."
 
"The student-athlete perspective is so important on so many different issues impacting women's basketball today. Sydney is a great leader and will be an amazing representative for the West Coast Conference."
 
The group consists of 32 current student-athletes from each of the conferences that make up Division I women's basketball. Representatives were nominated through the WBCA NCAA Division I Conference Captains program. Each captain submitted the name of a player from their team or conference who they believed would be a good representative for all women's basketball players in their respective conference.
 
"This is an amazing opportunity, and I am extremely thankful that I get to represent not only the WCC but also student-athletes throughout the country," said Hunter. "It is very important that our voices be heard and this is the first step towards that. These are our experiences, so it is only right that we are a part of the decision-making process during our careers."
 
The term of service for each student-athlete will coincide with athletics eligibility for competition. Hunter will have one year to represent San Diego and the WCC on the Student-Athlete Engagement Group.
