SAN DIEGO - Rion Simms has been named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic team, the conference announced on Friday.
Sophia Bjerk,
Madison Earnshaw,
Lauren Hendrickson,
Halle Kyler and
Courtney Rose also earned honorable mention nods.
This marks the first All-Academic team honor for Simms, who was named an honorable mention selection in 2020.
Simms carried a 3.96 GPA, while majoring in Accountancy and had the second highest GPA among players named to the All-Academic team. This season the Phoenix, Ariz. native started 40 games at second base and led the team in at bats (122), RBIs (11) and doubles (6). She was a key piece in the lineup for the Toreros putting together eight multi-hit games on the year.
The honorable mention nods are the first for Bjerk, Earnshaw, Hendrickson and Rose, while Kyler was recognized for the third consecutive season for her work in the classroom.
No fewer than 34 softball student-athletes qualified for academic honors and 20 of them posted a GPA of at least 3.50. Fourteen posted marks of 3.75 or better.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average while also being a significant contributor to her team.
