LOS ANGELES — No. 2 San Diego volleyball is set to begin its final regular-season road stretch of 2022 this week, traveling to Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine for a pair of matches as it continues West Coast Conference play.
The Toreros (24-1, 15-0 WCC) will get their week started on Thursday night with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Gersten Pavilion against the Lions (17-7, 12-3 WCC), then will remain on the road for a 12:00 p.m. matchup on Saturday opposite the Waves at the Firestone Fieldhouse. Both matches will be streamed live on the WCC Network, and live statistics will be provided on LMULions.com and PepperdineWaves.com.
CLOSING IN ON A CONFERENCE TITLE
• At 24-1 overall and a perfect 15-0 in WCC play so far in 2022, USD could clinch the 12th West Coast Conference Championship in program history as early as Thursday night.
• A loss by No. 17 BYU (19-5, 13-2 WCC) at RV Pepperdine AND a win by No. 2 San Diego at Loyola Marymount on Thursday would secure the Toreros the title.
• If San Diego wins on Thursday, it can claim the championship with a win at Pepperdine on Saturday, regardless of the Cougars' results on either Thursday or Saturday.
• The Toreros most recently won the WCC Championship in 2019, when the team went 25-6 (17-1 WCC) and went on to reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
HISTORIC RUN CONTINUES
• San Diego enters Thursday night's action on a 21-match win streak, the longest in program history.
• USD's win over Saint Mary's last Thursday pushed the Toreros to 20 wins in a row, surpassing the previous mark of 19 that had been set twice (1997 and 2004).
• 1997's team went 26-4 (13-1 WCC) and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament under former head coach Sue Synder.
• 2004's squad finished 24-5 (14-0 WCC) and reached an NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinal in head coachÂ
Jennifer Petrie's sixth season at the helm in San Diego.
• That group remains the only Torero volleyball team to finish undefeated in West Coast Conference play and is one of just four to reach a Regional Semifinal, something San Diego last accomplished in 2018.
HOW SWEEP IT IS
• San Diego, which last dropped a set on September 24 in its 3-2 win over Loyola Marymount, has won 40 sets in a row entering Thursday night's action.
• USD has swept each of its last 13 matches (September 29 at Gonzaga, October 1 at Portland, October 6 versus San Francisco, October 8 versus Santa Clara, October 13 at Pacific, October 15 at Saint Mary's, October 21 vs. No 17 BYU, October 27 vs. Portland, October 29 vs. Gonzaga, November 3 at Santa Clara, November 5 at San Francisco, November 10 vs. Saint Mary's, and November 12 vs. Pacific), and has won in straight sets in 19 of its 25 total contests so far this season.
• 13 of San Diego's 15 WCC wins in 2022 have been sweeps.
• The Toreros' 25-8 win over the Dons in the third set on October 6 marked San Diego's largest margin of victory so far this season (17 points), besting USD's 14-point, 25-11 win in the second set of its sweep of Saint Mary's in Moraga on October 15.
