SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program is set to see their first action of the 2022-23 season, hosting Concordia University Irvine for a scrimmage on Thursday at 6 p.m., in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- Head Coach Cindy Fisher returns for her 18th year at the helm of the program, fresh off a second round finish at the 2022 WNIT.
- Fisher adds two new coaches to the staff this season, as Jualeah Woods and Rachel Nagel enter their first season as assistant coaches at San Diego.
- The Toreros return nine members of their 2021-22 unit, including graduate student Myah Pace, who was recently named to the preseason All-WCC team.
- A graduate student, Pace is making her return from injury after being one of the most successful players on the 2020-21 team, averaging 11.8 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game.
- San Diego welcomes four newcomers to the roster for the 2022-23 season. Transfers Jess Finney (Washington) and Claire Gallagher (Lafayette) join the team as sophomores, while freshmen Melesungu Afeaki and Veronica Sheffey get set for their first season in San Diego.
- After losing players like Sydney Hunter, Steph Gorman and Jordyn Edwards to graduation, the Toreros will have a number of opportunities for players to step into bigger roles.
- Some of those players will likely include Kylie Horstmeyer and Kasey Neubert, who each recorded over 500 minutes last season.
TORERO TIDBITS
- The Toreros were picked to finish sixth in the 2022-23 WCC Preseason Poll. The placement was just one vote behind Saint Mary's and eight votes behind San Francisco.
- Last season's squad led the NCAA in steals with 410 and ranked second nationally in steals per game at 12.8. Several impact defensive players return to anchor the team's elite defense.
- While unable to make a dent in the records in this contest, Pace is closing in on several milestones in her highly successful Torero career, sitting just 157 points away from 1,000 and 47 rebounds away from 500 in her collegiate career.
- In addition, Pace ranks fifth all-time in career steals with 201 and is 20 away from tying Amy Kame for fourth place.
