SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program kicked off the final fall ball weekend of the season with a bang, defeating San Diego Mesa, 19-1, in a 10-inning game on Friday night at the USD Softball Complex.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Toreros turned in a highly efficient night of bringing home runners in scoring position home, that opened with a first inning RBI groundout for Izzy Owen.
- For the next two frames, the Toreros built the lead up to 5-0, as Ashley Daugherty, Savannah Alarcon, EJ Joyner and Arisa Tovar each drove in one run apiece.
- While the runs began to pour in, starting pitcher Courtney Rose was stellar in the circle, throwing four innings of one-hit ball. Â
- After an RBI sacrifice bunt by Amanda Limon, freshman Shawnese Hogue-Lacy helped break the game open with a two-run home run off the left field wall to make it 8-0.
- While San Diego Mesa was able to get a run back, the Toreros and reliever Emma Giaime helped clear any further trouble, after recovering from a bases loaded and no out situation.
- Runs would continue to filter in for the Toreros, who saw Natalie McCliman and Alyssa Hernandez get involved with RBIs in seventh inning, while Hogue-Lacy and Joecellia Roberts added more in the eighth inning to make it 13-1.
- The Toreros would ultimately add six more runs in the ninth inning, as Hogue-Lacy added two more RBI to bring her total to five on the day.
