SAN DIEGO — Graduate left-handed pitcher
Ian Churchill was selected in the 10th round of the 2022 MLB Draft (308th overall pick) by the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday afternoon, marking the fourth San Diego baseball player to be drafted this week after
Brycen Mautz (second round) was chosen by St. Louis late last evening and
Chase Meidroth (fourth round) and
Caleb Ricketts (seventh round) had their names called by Boston and Philadelphia earlier today.
Churchill's, Ricketts', Meidroth's, and Mautz's selections are the Toreros' most across the draft's first 10 rounds since 2010, when Sammy Solis, Kyle Blair, Matt Hauser, and Zach Walters were taken in the second, fourth, seventh, and ninth rounds, respectively.
Churchill joined San Diego in 2022 as a graduate transfer from the University of Arizona, where he played from 2020-2021. His time with the Wildcats saw him win the 2021 Pac-12 Championship and appear in the Tucson NCAA Super Regional versus Ole Miss along with a College World Series outing against Stanford.
This past season at USD, the Santa Barbara California native earned All-WCC Second Team honors after appearing in 18 of the Toreros' games on the mound and making four starts. The 6-foot-2 lefty went 3-2 with a 4.17 ERA, 57 strikeouts,12 walks, and a team-high four saves in 54.0 innings pitched, which ranked fourth on the USD roster. Season highlights included six no-hit innings against LMU on April 14 after entering in the top of the eighth, a scoreless ninth against Vanderbilt in USD's 3-2 win at the NCAA Corvallis Regional, and three more innings against the Commodores a day later that saw him allow zero earned runs.
Prior to USD and Arizona, Churchill attended Santa Barbara City College (2017-2019), logging nine wins and a 3.57 ERA with 163 strikeouts across two seasons with the Vaqueros. In 2019 he was California Community College Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year and was tabbed as a first team All-American after going 8-2 with a 1.96 ERA and 98 strikeouts over 82.2 IP as a sophomore.
