SAN DIEGO — A six-run third inning and a pair of dynamic pitching performances powered San Diego baseball (21-22-1, 14-9 WCC) to a big 8-4 win over BYU on Friday night, evening up its series with the Cougars (19-25, 9-11 WCC) at a game apiece.
GUREVITCH HEADLINES IMPRESSIVE OFFENSIVE EFFORT
- After BYU got on the board first with a run in the top of the third, the Toreros struck back in the bottom of the inning when Austin Smith drew a bases-loaded walk.
- Reigning WCC Player of the Week Will Worthington followed with a two-RBI single, then Jack Gurevitch punctuated USD's early rally with a towering three-run homer that put San Diego up by a 6-1 margin.
- An inning later, the Toreros added on with a pair of runs to make it 8-1 when both Angelo Peraza and Austin Smith hammered RBI singles.
- The Cougars plated two in the top of the sixth and one in the top of the eighth on two RBI singles of their own but got no closer, earning USD an 8-4 win on Friday night at Fowler Park that tied the three-game set at 1-1.
ROBINSON AND ROMERO DO IT ALL ON MOUND
- Ryan Robinson started Friday night's game on the mound for the Toreros in what marked his first start since 2021 and just the second of his college career.
- He turned in four stellar frames, allowing just a single run as he scattered five hits while walking just one and striking out one.
- Robinson was followed by Ivran Romero (2-4), who closed the game out with five innings of three-run ball that saw him allow seven hits but walk none and strike out a tied-for-game-high three enroute to his second win of 2023.
TORERO TIDBITS
- All eight of San Diego's runs on Friday were scored with two outs.
- Gurevitch's sixth home run of 2023 helped him to a game-high three RBIs.
- Smith and Worthington each drove in two runs.
- Worthington is batting .500 (8-for-16) over his last four games with four runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, and 10 RBIs.
- Peraza (2-for-4, two runs scored, one RBI) was the only Torero with multiple hits.
- Gabe D'Arcy and Smith both drew two walks, marking the second consecutive game that Smith has done so.
- Romero led USD with four strikeouts and picked up his second win of the season to move to 2-4 in 2023.
