Moore Announces Eight Additions to Football Coaching Staff

Four coaches added, four coaches retained ahead of 2023 season

SAN DIEGO — San Diego football has added eight members to its coaching staff for the upcoming 2023 season, as announced by new head coach Brandon Moore on Tuesday afternoon.

Mike Fassel, Richard Brown, Mike McGlinchey, and Issac Carter have all joined the program, while Matt Aponte, Austen Jacobs, Aaron Laut, and Cody Tescher have been retained.

"Torero Football is committed to sustaining a winning culture and I am confident that this group of coaches are not just talented teachers, but also great men of impeccable character and faith," said Moore. "I'm excited to see them put their passion and expertise to work as we pursue our 13th PFL Championship this fall."

Aponte has been promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after previously serving as the Toreros' tight ends coach. He joined San Diego in the fall of 2021 following six seasons at the University of Iowa under head coach Kirk Ferentz. Aponte was Hawkeyes' assistant quarterbacks coach in 2019 and 2020, and served as an offensive assistant from 2017 to 2018. During his career in Iowa City, the program won 60 games, three consecutive bowl games and a Big Ten West title.

Jacobs is set to return as USD's offensive line coach and will enter his second season in Alcala Park this fall.He joined the Toreros from Lamar University, where he coached tight ends. Prior to Lamar, Jacobs worked with an offensive front at San Diego State that helped produce nearly 350 yards of offense per game. During that stretch the Aztecs advanced to two bowl game appearances, including a 10-win season and a victory in the New Mexico Bowl in 2019.

Fassel will serve as USD's special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. He joins the Toreros after spending four seasons at Utah Tech, most recently as the Trailblazers' assistant head coach (2021 and 2022). Utah Tech's special teams unit thrived in 2019 under Fassel's watch, setting program records in field goals (11) and extra points (42) across just five games.

He came to Utah Tech from Snow College, where he spent the 2017 season as the Director of Football Operations, as well as serving as the wide receivers and special teams coach for the Badgers.

Prior to working at both the collegiate and professional level, Fassel spent his playing days as a three-year starter and letter-winner as both a kicker and holder at Boston College, where he graduated in 2004 before earning his master's degree in the summer of 2005.

Brown will serve as San Diego's wide receivers coach. He joins USD following two seasons at California Lutheran, where he served as the Lancers' recruiting coordinator and safeties coach.

Prior to CLU, he was an assistant coach at Occidental College (NCAA Division III) from 2013-2016 working with wide receivers.

After a three-year professional playing career in the Arena Football League, Brown joined the coaching ranks at Calabasas High School, where he oversaw assistant defensive backs and wide receivers.

McGlinchey will be the Toreros' assistant head coach, co-defensive coordinator, and defensive line coach. Prior to USD, he was the head coach at Division II William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri for three seasons (2020-2022).
