SAN DIEGO – The San Diego men's soccer program has made another big splash in the transfer portal, signing defender
Owen Walz as a transfer.
Walz heads to San Diego following a season at Virginia. The rising sophomore will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
"Owen brings a strong, physical presence to our team, as well as being a player that can distribute from the back," said head coach
Brian Quinn. "I feel he is a great addition to our defensive corps."
A native of Arlington, Va., Walz brings a highly-regarded soccer pedigree to the West Coast, after his freshman season for the nationally ranked Cavaliers. Walz made two appearances this past season against Rider and Maryland.
Walz played his club soccer for D.C. United's academy team, where he was the No. 44 prospect in the nation and a four-star recruit, according to TopDrawerSoccer.com. Walz played his way onto D.C. United's senior side during the 2021 preseason, playing three matches as the only academy player to earn the call-up.
Walz made his professional soccer debut for USL Championship side Loudon United, where he played in nine matches at just 17 years old, scoring a goal for the team.
Walz is the fifth transfer to join this program this offseason, joining
Denis Kelmendi (Falkenberg, Sweden/Seton Hall),
Matteo Gasperoni (Cesena, Italy/Florida International),
Ryan Cedeno (Coconut Creek, Fla./George Washington) and
Luis Ludosan (Mannheim, Germany/Saint Joseph's).
