Austin Smith Named 2024 Third Team All-American by NCBWA and ABCA

Junior utility man is also finalist for 2024 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award

DALLAS — Junior utility player Austin Smith has been named a 2024 Third-Team All-American by both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association, the organizations announced this week.

The El Cajon, California native shined on both sides of the ball this year, posting a 7-0 record, three saves, a 3.49 ERA, and 49 strikeouts across 56.2 innings pitched, eight relief appearances, and nine starts. At the plate he batted .314 (64-for-204) with 42 runs scored, 11 doubles, seven home runs, 39 RBIs, and 13 hit by pitches while slugging .471 and getting on base at a .429 clip.

Smith, who transferred to USD from UC San Diego prior to the 2023 season, was also named as one of 10 finalists for the 2024 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year, a semifinalist for the 2024 Dick Howser Trophy, and to the 2024 All-WCC First Team.

He is the third Torero to earn 2024 All-American honors (Conner Thurman, NCBWA First Team and Jakob Christian, ABCA First Team), and joins Thomas Luevano (2021), Brycen Mautz (2022), and Caleb Ricketts (2023) as USD's fourth Third-Team All-American since 2021.
