Jakob Christian Named 2024 ABCA First Team All-American

Junior outfielder is just third Torero since 2013 to earn First Team All-American honors

GREENSBORO, NC — San Diego baseball's Jakob Christian has been named a 2024 ACBA/Rawlings NCAA Division I First Team All-American, the American Baseball Coaches Association announced on Friday morning.

Christian joins teammate Conner Thurman as just the second Torero to earn First Team All-American honors since USD Athletics Hall of Famer Kris Bryant did so in 2013.

ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first-team selections, which were announced June 11, were nominated for All-America honors.

First recognized in 1949, the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-America teams are selected by the ABCA All-America & Coach of the Year committee, which is chaired by Tommy Raffo. The committee also includes Mitch Canham (Oregon State University), Dean Ehehalt (Monmouth University), Brian Green (Wichita State University), Jeff Mercer (Indiana University), Brian O'Connor (University of Virginia), Jim Penders (University of Connecticut), and Butch Thompson (Auburn University).

Christian, a junior outfielder who was also named the 2024 WCC Player of the Year, a semifinalist for the 2024 Dick Howser Trophy, a 2024 ABCA All-West Region First Team selection, to the 2024 All-WCC First Team, and to the 2024 NCAA Santa Barbara Regional All-Tournament Team, turned in USD's most dominant offensive season since 2013 this spring, drawing comparisons to Torero Legend Kris Bryant after batting .364 (72-for-198) with 59 runs scored, 14 doubles, 26 home runs, 67 runs batted in, 28 walks, eight hit by pitches, an .828 slugging percentage, and a .460 on-base percentage while playing in 51 of his team's 56 games and making 51 starts in 2024.

His excellence wasn't limited to what he did at the plate. Christian posted a .991 fielding percentage, committing only one error across 117 chances while playing primarily right field.

He is the third Torero to earn 2024 All-American honors (Conner Thurman, NCBWA First Team and Austin Smith, NCBWA and ABCA Third Team), and joins Thomas Luevano (2021), Brycen Mautz (2022), and Caleb Ricketts (2023) as USD's fifth All-American since 2021.
