"Letters From Lav" Volume Three: Summer Progress Review

Hello Torero Nation:

Last week, we concluded a productive and rewarding two-month summer training camp with our 2025-26 Men's Basketball team.

The eight weeks of workouts and team building and bonding has allowed the group to gain a better sense for one another as teammates. These formative experiences are vital as we build momentum and cohesion in preparation for the fast-approaching season ahead.

One of the most memorable experiences of the summer was an evening service at the San Diego Rescue Mission, "a non-profit organization that provides shelter, recovery services and support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness, hunger, poverty and abuse." The perspective gained and connections made were priceless — without one point scored or rebound secured. It was purely a night of fellowship, further deepening relationships with our neighbors.

Back at the BPC, we have been pleased with the progress our players have made on the court and in the weight room.

Versatile freshman D'Arrae Goodwin, standing 6'5, has demonstrated his value on the court daily. His improvement is directly attributable to his work ethic and positive attitude. He constantly seeks out new ways to grow. He asks questions when he is unsure. He gives his full effort and brings his voice to every drill.

Wake Forest transfer Ty-Laur Johnson has brought outstanding speed, quickness, vision and skill to the court. He has an ability to orchestrate at high speeds in transition and on the half-court as well. His defensive prowess is exhibited with pressure on the ball and personifies alert, off-ball awareness as well.

Senior Dominique Ford, a transfer from Southern Utah, brings a calm and steady temperament to the court. His graceful maneuvering and quiet confidence enhances our squad. In short, Dominique rarely gets rattled and brings a sense of poise every team needs.

These three players are just a few examples of the upbeat, "can-do" mindset that is emblematic of what we have experienced with this group of Toreros on a daily basis.

Possibly the most encouraging element we have noted this summer is the camaraderie between our veteran players and the freshmen. The wiser, seasoned vets have not seen the age gap as anything more than an opportunity to build a Torero brotherhood. The sense of togetherness has permeated the team on and off the court. One of the elements of our five-on-five competition this summer has been the "assist game" where we give an extra point for every basket made that comes directly from a teammate's pass. We believe the game of basketball is best when playing for one another is unselfish and cohesive.

This momentum was only further solidified by a visit from President Harris when he attended one of our open practices. At the conclusion of the scrimmage, his words of encouragement emphasized a message of incremental growth and what it takes to build something special.

I look forward to highlighting more members of our team in upcoming letters, and sincerely appreciate your unyielding support of the Toreros.

Feel free to drop me a line via text or email anytime you'd like to visit a practice at our Basketball Performance Center.

Warm regards,
