JR's Journal | Vol. 1: Counting Down the Days

Dear Torero Fans,

It's nearly been eight weeks since I arrived on campus and it's been an incredible experience stepping in as the new head coach. The energy building around the program is undeniable. From day one, there's been a buzz — on campus, with our supporters, and within our locker room — that something special is taking shape. On a personal note, having my family finally here with me has made it even more meaningful. My kids have fully embraced the beautiful weather and, of course, the pool at the house — big wins for a family who is used to four seasons and snow storms, no doubt. It's those little things that make this transition feel like home.

Recruiting has been a major focus, and navigating the transfer portal has required both urgency and intention. I'm proud of how efficient and relationship-driven our staff has been throughout the process. We've been locked in on identifying players who not only fit our disruptive defensive identity but also complement our offensive vision — playing with pace and consistently attacking the paint. Every addition has been about alignment, toughness, and a shared belief in how we want to compete.

When you look at our guard core, there's a lot to be excited about. Braylon Roman brings elite talent to the point guard position and has a natural command of the game. Davion Hill is a dynamic athlete who impacts the game in multiple ways on both ends of the floor. Caleb Versher, a returning player, has been here putting in the work all offseason and setting the tone with his consistency. And then there's Chace Holley, a Southern California freshman who plays with confidence beyond his years and takes pride in guarding the ball. It's a group with versatility, edge, and a real hunger to prove themselves.

We're counting down the days until early June when we get everyone on campus and officially get to work. Summer practices will start bright and early — 6:30 a.m., four days a week — and we're ready to embrace that grind. This is where habits are built, where identity is formed, and where we commit to getting better every single day. We're excited about the foundation we're laying and the standard we're setting.

Our goal is clear: Raise the bar here at USD!

G.B.D. and Go Toreros!
